Al-Islam Specialist Hospital

Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative

Supporting Breastfeeding. Supporting the Best Start in Life.

Al-Islam Specialist Hospital is working towards recognition under the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. This programme supports safe maternity care and strong breastfeeding support for mothers and newborns.

This effort is guided by international standards developed by World Health Organization and UNICEF together with national healthcare guidelines in Malaysia.

Breastfeeding is a natural and valuable foundation for a child’s growth, health, and emotional bonding. Our role is to support mothers with the right information, care, and encouragement from birth and beyond.

Our goal is simple. We want every mother and baby to receive the right support from the moment of birth until going home.

What is BFHI

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program introduced in 1991 by WHO and UNICEF. It aims to ensure that healthcare facilities protect, promote, and support breastfeeding as the best start for every newborn.
In Malaysia, BFHI was implemented in 1993. Government hospitals achieved full BFHI recognition by 1998. Today, more private hospitals are moving towards this standard to strengthen breastfeeding support nationwide.

What this means for mothers and babies

When a hospital follows this initiative, mothers receive better guidance and support during pregnancy, delivery, and after birth.

As part of our journey towards BFHI, Al-Islam Specialist Hospital supports breastfeeding through

Our healthcare team is trained to support mothers with compassion, patience, and professional care.

This approach helps babies grow well and helps mothers feel more confident during the early days after birth.

Breastfeeding and Islamic Values

In Islam, caring for a newborn includes the responsibility to provide proper nutrition and protection during early life. The Quran gives guidance about this in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 233.

The verse explains that mothers may breastfeed their children for up to two full years for those who wish to complete the nursing period. It also reminds families that the responsibility of caring for the child is shared. The father is required to support the mother with food, clothing, and proper care during this time.

This guidance highlights balance and compassion in family life. Breastfeeding is encouraged because it supports the health of the baby and strengthens the bond between mother and child. At the same time, Islam recognises that every family situation is different. Decisions should consider the wellbeing of both mother and baby.

At Al-Islam Specialist Hospital, this teaching inspires our approach to maternity care. We support mothers who choose to breastfeed and provide guidance that respects both medical knowledge and Islamic values. Our team is trained to assist mothers during the early days after delivery so they feel confident and supported.

This reflects our commitment to provide care that nurtures physical health while respecting faith and family wellbeing.

Why this initiative matters

Research shows that hospitals that follow these standards improve early breastfeeding success and strengthen the health of both mother and baby.

For families, this means

We respect each mother’s journey and provide support without pressure, judgment, or blame.

It also reflects our commitment to holistic care, which is aligned with our hospital values.

These steps help mothers start breastfeeding with confidence and reduce common difficulties.

Moving Forward Together

Our journey towards BFHI reflects our commitment to quality care, evidence-based practice, and values that place mothers and babies at the heart of healthcare. We welcome and support all mothers who choose to breastfeed, and we are here to walk this journey with you.

Al-Islam Specialist Hospital is currently strengthening training, policies, and patient support as part of the preparation for this recognition.

This effort involves our maternity team, paediatric specialists, nurses, and hospital management. The aim is to provide care that supports both medical needs and the wellbeing of mothers and families.
