Wudu Guidance

For Patients who are Unable to Perform Wudu by Themselves

1. The patient should make the intention before performing wudu.

2. Wipe the patient’s face using the helper’s hand that has been moistened with water from a spray bottle. The face includes the area from the hairline to the chin and from the right ear tragus to the left ear tragus.

3. Spray water on the patient’s hands and spread it evenly up to the elbows on both the right and left sides.
4. Spray and wipe water on the patient’s head.

5. Spray water and spread it evenly on the patient’s feet up to the ankles on both the right and left sides.

Method of Wudu for Patients with Dressings

Condition

Wudu Limbs that are Covered with Dressings

  • Begin with the intention to perform wudu.
  • Perform wudu as usual according to the correct order.
  • For limbs that have dressings, there are several matters to observe.
  • Wash the exposed parts of the wudu limb that are not covered by dressing.
  • Wipe water over the dressed area if the dressing is waterproof, as long as it does not cause harm or difficulty, based on advice from the doctor or healthcare staff.
  • Leave the dressed area if the dressing is not waterproof and if wiping it may cause harm or difficulty, based on advice from the doctor or healthcare staff.
  • Continue performing wudu until completion.
Tayammum
  • Using clean earth or dust
  • One tayammum may only be used for one obligatory prayer. There is no limit for voluntary prayers or other acts of worship according to the Shafie school of thought
Method of Performing Tayammum
  • Begin with the intention of tayammum to permit prayer
  • Place both hands on the clean earth or dust and lightly remove excess
  • Wipe the dust over the face as in wudu Place both hands on the clean earth or dust again and lightly remove excess
  • Wipe the dust over both hands up to the elbows on the right and left sides as in wudu
Situations That Allow Tayammum
  • Absence of water or limited availability of water that is only sufficient for daily needs such as drinking
  • Inability to use water for wudu or ritual bath due to illness or harm such as fear of enemy, risk of infection or disease, or delay in healing
  • Extremely cold weather
